The aim of this paper is to present the palaeo-environmental approaches and preliminary results in the district of Northern Imera river, corresponding to the territory of the ancient cities of Himera (destroyed in 409 BC) and Thermae Himeraeae (founded in 407 BC). The area is located in the North-West of Sicily, and it is mainly characterized by hilly landscape crossed by rivers facing the Thyrrenian Sea, and by a mountainous landscape (the Madonie) on the eastern side. In central-northern Sicily, the watershed area between the northern and southern Imera and Platani rivers has already been recognized for years as a pivotal area in relations between the different areas of the island, both in reference to the political and economic projections of the colonial poleis , especially between Himera, Akragas, both in reference to economic relations and cultural contacts with indigenous communities. This paper analyzes and quantifies the land use/land cover changes of the main forest and semi-natural landscape types in Sicily between 1955 and 2012. We analyzed seven representative forest and shrubland landscapes in Sicily. These study areas were chosen for their importance in the Sicilian forest panorama. We carried out a diachronic survey on historical and current aerial photos; all the aerial images used to survey the land use/land cover changes were digitalized and georeferenced in the UTM WGS84 system.
